MEXECO at Fitur: Building Alliances for a Different Tourism Model

  • by

A few weeks ago, at Fitur, Spain’s most important tourism fair, the MEXECO project was represented by Carlos Calderón, project coordinator and coordinator of the Master’s Program in Responsible Tourism at the Polytechnic University of Madrid.

Carlos’s participation was made possible thanks to Group Co’ox Mayab, who kindly provided his entry to the event. Group Co’ox Mayab is a network of community-based tourism enterprises from the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico that work collectively to promote sustainable tourism rooted in Mayan culture, local governance, and fair economic distribution. Their work is a clear example of how communities can organize to strengthen tourism from within their own territories.

During Fitur, Carlos shared MEXECO’s objectives and progress, highlighting the collaborative work we are developing with communities and organizations in Mexico, Costa Rica, and Spain to strengthen community-based ecotourism and responsible tourism.

Although a few weeks have passed since the event, we wanted to highlight this moment: bringing the project to an internationally renowned space like Fitur is also a way to open new conversations and show that another model of tourism is not only necessary, but possible.

We continue working to ensure that these partnerships translate into real and lasting impact in the territories.
